His projects take place in everyday public spaces, using film, sound, projection, performance, and spatial design to create collective moments. While projects are often large in scale, they remain rooted in daily life and local connection. Rosier’s work has been installed in public spaces in London, Paris, Austin, and Tokyo, and commissioned by local authorities including Westminster, Cheshire East, and the City of London, as well as institutions such as Somerset House, Historic Royal Palaces, the National Landscapes Association, British Council Japan, and the UK Space Agency. His work has been presented at the Design Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum, nominated for the Design Museum’s Designs of the Year, and awarded the Active Public Space Award, the London Contemporary Art Prize Public Vote Award, and the Museum + Heritage Innovation Award. His projects have also regularly featured on BBC and ITV. Every participant was filmed in front of the same grey backdrop. School children, NHS workers, drag artists, vicars, Tesco staff, construction workers, pigeon fanciers and the production crew crossed paths across the three facades of the Maxwell Building, in moments of juxtaposition and playfulness. People travelling to and from Peel Park passed beneath it, encountering the projection as a monumental credits list. It was punctuated by live performances from poet Lynn Walton, Eccles Borough Band and the Pendleton Sixth Form College Choir, with the band and choir arranged and conducted by Michael Betteridge. Salford City Mayor Paul Dennett personally thanked everyone involved for bringing people together, at a moment of social division in the city and the wider country. Created with the surrounding community over the course of a year, it opened in summer 2025 with the first Luton Henge Festival, now an annual event. Creation ProcessOver six months, Matthew led a creation process with local residents, supported by Revoluton Arts, exploring the work’s inspirations, from Neolithic history and material culture to quarry raves. It culminated in “What is a Luton Henge?”, a community gathering where people discussed their hopes for their new Henge. This process directly shaped the design of the Henge, how it will be managed, and the opening festival. The work was strongly inspired and supported by the Exodus Collective (above), the Luton free party and community action collective of the 1990s, now Marsh Farm Outreach, who run the community centre next to the site. Set within a BMX track, the design reshaped the site to create a central gathering space while keeping the track intact. Each of the eight stones is oriented with meaning, pointing towards the nearby source of the River Lea, or to sunrise and sunset on the solstices. A series of seats made from charred local wood were designed with architecture studio Common Practice and built with residents through workshops. Every stage was an opportunity for local people to have a hand in its making, from tamping down the chalk with hammers to building the benches and landscaping the site. Led by Revoluton Arts, it invited local artists, comedians, makers and musicians to perform in the Henge, testing how the space could be used from day into evening. Together they raised funds for the 2026 festival, as well as further commissions and workshops that respond to the Henge. Revoluton Arts also supports the Marsh Farm Young Collective, a group of young creatives shaping the Henge’s future programme. Over the three nights thousands of people gathered in the centre of Berwick Barracks Parade Ground, turning its historic function inside out, to watch the performance with live drumming and pipes.&nbsp; FilmingOver five days participants were filmed moving one by one in front of a plain grey backdrop, exactly one tenth of the size of the real Berwick Barracks’ largest wall. Filmed groups included farmers, dock workers, wild swimmers, military veterins, a class from every school. Participants were edited together to form one continuous parade projected at giant scale onto the three walls of Berwick Barracks’s parade ground. With the bands playing amongst the audience, this liveness created a connection between those watching and being projected. The project was built around the action most associated with the navvy: digging. It became a groundbreaking ceremony, echoing the one that marked the start of the Manchester Ship Canal’s construction 135 years earlier. The digging was filmed from high above using a telehandler. White spades, picks and barrows were used to contrast with the earth. These moving, disembodied tools became the basis of the underwater projection, commemorating the anonymous labour of the navvies. Installation Footage of the garden being dug was projected beneath the surface of the Manchester Ship Canal for a two-week installation, connecting labour past and present through the act of digging. The artwork was accompanied by a soundscape by Hayley Suviste, weaving recorded testimonies from the Loaves &amp; Fishes community with original orchestral music recorded with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra. Together, the underwater spades, picks and barrows and the orchestral score formed a digging symphony, the tools working in unspoken harmony. During the three-night installation over 2,000 residents came to view and interact with the replaying, and in 2019 the project won the the London Contemporary Art Prize public vote award. The project was the result of a residency exploring the public spaces of Macclesfield, and was commissioned by SHIFT and Cheshire East Council with support from FutureEverything, Barnaby Festival and Arts Council England.
